… forcefully had sex with 13-yr-old during bird catching expedition
A bird catching expedition up the Canje River turned into a horrifying experience for a 13-year-old girl when she was repeatedly raped by a friend of her family.
Alwyn Roberts is accused of repeatedly raping the young girl while the rest of her family went off in the bushes to catch birds.
Roberts, of Glasgow Housing Scheme, Edinburgh, East Bank Berbice was remanded to prison by Magistrate Chandra Sohan when he appeared before him at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court. He was charged with having carnal knowledge of a child under the age of 15 years.
The labourer was not required to plead to the indictable charge when it was read to him.
The court was told by Prosecutor Corporal, Roberto Figueira, that between Saturday August 1 and Monday August 31 last, at War Landing in the Canje River, the accused repeatedly and forcefully had sex with the child.
Roberts is a friend of the girl’s family and would usually visit their home.
During the period under question, they all journeyed up the Canje River to catch birds.
While the rest of the family was away in the jungle hunting their game, Roberts and the teen were left alone on the boat.
It is alleged that he took the opportunity to commit the dastardly act, by forcing himself on the girl, repeatedly whilst issuing threats.
The girl took the earliest opportunity when the rest of the family returned to inform her mother, who subsequently reported the matter to the police.
Roberts was then apprehended and charged.
The prosecutor opposed bail on the grounds of the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence.
He further stated that the accused is known to the family and if granted bail there is the likelihood that the act would continue and he would tamper with the witness. Additionally, he reasoned that it is possible that the accused will not return for his trial.
The Magistrate refused bail and the matter will continue on Wednesday at the same court.
