A 56-year-old woman attempting to buy kerosene and a 72-year-old man coming from a Masjid, perished in separate accidents between Saturday night and yesterday on the East Bank Public Road.
Mohamed Ali,72, of Lot 78 Mc Doom, East Bank Demerara, had reportedly just left a Masjid at around 20: 45 hrs on Saturday when he was struck by a car.
He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he succumbed at around 22:30 hrs.
The driver is reportedly in police custody.
The other victim, 56-year-old Sarah Singh, of Lot 106 Grove Public Road, was killed at around 05:30 hrs yesterday while crossing the East Bank Demerara Public Road near Providence.
Police said that Singh, who has six children, was heading to a nearby filling station to buy kerosene when she was struck by a pickup.
Relatives said that by the time they were informed about the accident, the body had already been taken to the mortuary.
Kaieteur News understands that the vehicle belongs to a well-know security firm. The driver has been detained and the vehicle impounded at the Providence Police Station.
The East Bank Demarara Public Road has been the most deadly route this year for commuters and pedestrians.
At least 16 road users have perished on this route between January and this month, according to statistics released by the Police Traffic Department.
A Senior Traffic official told Kaieteur News yesterday that 70 people, including nine children, have perished in road accidents this year. In contrast, 73 people, including three children,during the same period last year.
Among the victims are Barama Timber Company employee Albert Pearson, 59, and his wife, Alicia Pearson, 62, who died on the spot near Friendship, East Bank Demerara after being struck by a pickup.
In July, Richard Chinian, 23, Asheeki Asgar Ally, 19, and James Sookdeo, 23, all of Lot 50 Covent Garden, died after a car they were in crashed into a lamp-post near Providence, East Bank Demerara.
On July 6, Onica Holder, 22, of Annandale, East Coast Demerara, perished after a speeding car she was in smashed into a utility pole near Grove, East Bank Demerara.
In June, 25-year-old Mary Sandy, a mother of four, was killed after being struck by a car while crossing the East Bank Demerara public road, near Providence.
