– fisherman detained
Police have detained a fisherman in connection with the murder of a 17-year-old boy, who had his throat slashed with a cutlass at around 17:00 hrs yesterday at Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice.
Darshan Ramnanan, of Lot 95 Bush Lot New Housing Scheme, collapsed and died on a roadway before he could receive medical attention.
Police said that Ramnanan had previous brushes with the law but stated that they had no motive for his killing.
However, relatives alleged that the murder was orchestrated by a villager who alleged that the teen was involved in a recent burglary at his home.
Kaieteur News understands that Ramnanan, who reportedly did odd jobs in the community, left home at around 16:00 hrs.
About an hour later, relatives received a message that someone had killed him.
An aunt of the victim told Kaieteur News that Ramnanan was still alive when she arrived at the scene.
However, she said he was ‘fluttering’ on the ground and bleeding profusely from a wound to his throat.
According to the woman, other villagers were present but made no attempt to help.
The aunt said that she held her nephew in her arms to stem the bleeding while calling the Fort Wellington Police Station.
According to the woman, a police rank arrived in a car about 10 minutes later, but allegedly told her that she would have to wait for an ambulance.
But she said that no ambulance came and her nephew eventually died in her arms.
Police told Kaieteur News that a 44-year-old fisherman was subsequently detained in connection with Ramnanan’s death.
The dead man’s aunt alleged that a villager who claimed that her nephew had recently stolen from him had given the suspect the cutlass with which the injury was inflicted.
According to the aunt, villagers had often wrongly accused her nephew of committing crimes in the community.
