Crosse, Nanan surprisingly sidelined
By Sean Devers
In-form former Guyana Under-15 Skipper Kwame Crosse and left-arm spinner Raj Nanan have been surprisingly left out of the Demerara Under-17 team to face Berbice in a limited overs game at the Rose Hall Canje tomorrow as part of the Berbice Cricket Board’s (BCB) 70th anniversary celebrations.
The match is scheduled to commence at 11:00hrs and the Demerara side will be led by National Under-15 off-spinner Shaquille Williams with fellow Guyana Under-15 player Chanderpaul Hemraj as his Vice-Captain.
The left-handed Crosse, who captained Guyana in last year’s regional Under-15 tournament, recently scored a 2nd division century for Malteenoes before making 49 on his first division debut earlier this month, while Nanan has been playing for GCC at the first division level this season in addition to taking wickets consistently in 2nd division cricket and omission of these 2 players is baffling.
The squad was selected by the Demerara youth selection panel headed by Nazimul Drepaul and follows the strange omission from even the stand-by list of Drepaul’s son Sauid by the Demerara 4-day squad picked by the county’s senior panel. Drepaul was the leading all-rounder in the only 2 innings first division competition played in Demerara this year with 386 runs from 6 matches and 24 wickets with his left-arm spin. The former Everest Captain has been selected in the Rest team as the Demerara selectors continue to play musical chairs with their players.
Former national off-spinner and Demerara senior team Coach Gavin Nedd has been appointed Manager/Coach of the team which will depart from the Guyana Cricket Board office at 07:00hrs on Sunday for Berbice.
The Demerara U-17 team read:-Shaquelle Williams (Captain), Reyad Zaman, Brian Sattaur, Sunil Rupee, Chandrapaul Hemraj (Vice Captain), Vishal Narine, Jaron Byron, Denish Mangal, Poorandra Jaigobin, Treon Bobb, Omesh Dhaniram, Karim Norton, Cleon Critchlow, Gavin Nedd (Manager/Coach)
