… are just allegations, police must investigate
The President yesterday told media operatives that he would not be in support of Health Minister Dr Leslie Ramsammy demitting office in order to facilitate a probe into the allegations that he may have assisted in the purchase of the now infamous ‘spy computer’ that was in the possession of self confessed drug trafficker Shaheed ‘Roger’ Khan.
The Head of State during a press briefing yesterday said that Ramsammy had denied writing any letter in his cabinet portfolio indicating the government’s support for the purchase of such equipment.
According to the president, he would not have the Minister demit office based on an allegation stemming from a letter which could have been fabricated.
According to the president it is the responsibility of the Guyana Police Force to conduct an investigation into the allegations.
“There need not be any specific objective because the police have my support in any investigation that they will do.”
He noted that should he remove Dr Ramsammy based on an allegation, then he may end up without a cabinet.
As it relates to having the international community conduct an investigation, as was the case when then Home Affairs Minister Rondal Gajraj was accused of heading a phantom squad, the president said that it was different in that, “that case was specific to the police leadership and also too Gajraj.”
He noted that in this case, “the police is the sole authority in the land to investigate any criminality…what we have are allegations of criminality.”
He noted that in the previous inquiry the investigation was beyond criminality and entered the realm of policy.
The line of questioning of the president comes in wake of renewed calls for the resignation of the Health Minister.
The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) in a statement to the media disclosed that it had taken careful and serious note of the report in the media as it relates to a letter which they allege confirms the link between Khan and the Government.
According to the PNCR, the revelation ties the Minister firmly to the activities of Roger Khan, the most notorious aspect of which was the killing of more than two hundred 200 Guyanese.
“The Minister of Health must therefore resign his office forthwith.”
Dr. Ramsammy has continuously denied the allegation and President Bharrat Jagdeo has supported the Minister throughout.
According to reports from Capitol News, the letter bearing the Ministry of Health’s official letterhead is dated October 24 2002.
The signature on the letter appeared faded but this was attributed to copying over a period of time.
It is addressed to one, Nancy, and is headlined, “re: Acquiring the services of cell phone interceptor and geographic integrator.”
The letter purportedly signed by Dr Ramsammy stated that, “Guyana is in the throes of one of the worst crime situation the nation has ever faced.
We are interested in acquiring your service for a short period so that we can enhance our intelligence.”
The letter went on to state that Guyanese representatives were in touch with the Spy Shop, through which the equipment was purchased.
According to the Capitol News report, the person who signed the letter stated that he had spoken directly to Nancy, and the fact that the letter was written on the Ministry of Health official letterhead gives the impression that the initiative had government’s support.
The letter according to the report is signed “yours truly, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, Minister of Health, Government of Guyana.
