The lone sitting East Coast Magistrate, Haymant Ramdani, is to get assistance in manning the five courts on the East Coast, Chancellor of the Judiciary (ag) Carl Singh said yesterday.
Kaieteur News reported yesterday that Magistrate Ramdani was left to handle a crisis situation in which three other courts would be under his jurisdiction in addition to his duty stations at Mahaica and Mahaicony. The other courts he was scheduled to preside over were Sparendaam, Vigilance and Cove and John.
The two other Magistrates who were serving the East Coast have both proceeded on leave. These are Magistrate Yohhanhnseh Cave, who presided over the Sparendaam Court and Magistrate Sherdel Issaacs-Marcus, who served the courts at Vigilance and Cove and John.
Magistrate Cave has not resigned, as reported yesterday, but has proceeded on leave, the Chancellor Singh confirmed.
When contacted for a comment on the situation at the East Coast courts, Chancellor Singh agreed that it was “difficult” for one Magistrate to man the East Coast courts, and said the Chief Magistrate (ag) Melissa Robertson was making arrangements to bring some relief to Ramdhani.
As a result, Kaieteur News understands that assistance would be in the form of an additional magistrate being posted to the East Coast as of Monday.
Singh told Kaieteur News that this is the time when Magistrates go on leave and this results in situations as has developed on the East Coast. The Chancellor is head of the Judicial Service Commission which is directly responsible for appointing Magistrates.
With the mid-July appointment of Sueanna Lovell, the country now has 19 Magistrates. Singh told Kaieteur News that two new magistrates are due to be appointed shortly.
