Beat New Amsterdam Canje in inter-zone final
Lower Corentyne defeated New Amsterdam/Canje on first innings points to emerge champions of the highly successful inaugural Republic Bank sponsored Under-17 Inter-Zone tournament organized by the Berbice Cricket Board.
Contesting the final at the Port Mourant round, Lower Corentyne’s victory was orchestrated by three outstanding individual performances, Lionel Lewis’ brilliant 64, Shawn Perreira’s undefeated 53 and national under-15 left arm spinner Gudakesh Motie Kanhai’s 6-23 haul.
Lower Corentyne won the toss and invited the visitors to take first strike on a pitch with some preparation moisture. New Amsterdam struggled to get the ball off the square owing to some accurate bowling by medium pacers Sharmendra Hardial and Lionel Lewis.
Shawn Sattaur and skipper Jamally Odle added four runs in the first six overs before Sattaur edged Hardial to wicketkeeper Andy Mohan for a duck. Odle followed in the next over when he was brilliantly caught by Shawn Perreira at gully off Lionel Lewis also without scoring to leave New Amsterdam struggling at 4-2.
Kevin Ramdeen (17) lived a charmed life to add 35 with the impressive Joemal La Fleur (20) for the 3rd wicket before La Fleur threw his wicket away, stumped off Motie at 39-3. Ramdeen who was miss-stumped twice off leg spinner Shawn Perreira was eventually caught behind at 45-4.
Wickets continued to fall regularly, Devendra Jainabi stroking 15 down the order. New Amsterdam were eventually dismissed for 86 off 41 of their allotted 60 overs. Motie spun webs around the batsmen to end with attractive figures of 6-26 from 14.3 overs with 3 maidens. Off spinner Lloydel Lewis backed up with 2-5 off three.
In reply, Lower Corentyne lost former National Under-15 player Dominic Rickey (11-1) in the 3rd over. Opener Surujnarine Kandasammy and Andy Mohan added 21 for the 2nd wicket before Mohan was dismissed for 15 (2 fours).
Solid batting their after resulted in Lower Corentyne posting a commanding 233 all out in 57.4 overs. Lionel Lewis 64 (4 fours 3 sixes), Shawn Perreira 53* (5 fours), Kandasammy 28 and Rajendra Dasrat 28 (3 fours) all batted well for Lower Corentyne.
Off spinner Kevin Ramdeen took 6-75 off 16 overs while pacer mark Jackman had 2-16 off 4 overs for Lower Corentyne, the game ending in a draw.
At the presentation ceremony after the match was called off at 16.30 hours, BCB Public Relations Officer Hilbert Foster hailed the tournament a success citing the fact that a number of new players were unearthed and along with the known talented players excelling. The tournament he said was organised along with the Leslie Amsterdam Under-17 Memorial Inter Club, to bridge the gap between Under-15 and 19 levels and forms part of the BCB’s effort to promote the game at all levels.
Praises were showered on Republic Bank for its continued investment in Berbice cricket. Former Guyana Cricket Board Secretary Bishwa Panday was also complimented for stream lining the sponsorship.
Berbice Cricket Board President Keith Foster hailed the high standard of cricket played throughout the tournament and challenged the young players to always be disciplined and committed to the game while making sure that they remain in school. Manager of the Rose Hall town Branch of Republic Bank, Leon Mc Donald congratulated the BCB for hosting a well organised and highly competitive tournament while expressing the Bank’s satisfaction with its investment.
He called on the players to be role models to their peers and stated that Republic Bank would continue to invest in Guyana’s youths. The winning team received the beautiful Republic Bank trophy along with educational materials while the losing team also collected educational materials.
Motie received the Best Bowler Award of a Right Start Republic Bank Account starting at $2 000 while Lionel Lewis also received similar prizes for his Best Batsman and Man of the Finals Awards.
