Mohamed, Chandrika to participate
By Sean Devers
A pulsating day of cricket for the entire family is anticipated on October 3 at the Enterprise ground on the East Coast of Demerara when the Enterprise Premier League (EPL) Inter zone 20/20 fund raising cricket competition bowls off.
National off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed will captain one of the four zone teams while former West Indies under-19 player Rajendra Chandrika is also expected to play in the competition which has been organized by the Enterprise Community Literacy Programme.
The competition, which is being used to raise funds for the Village’s Library and Skills training programme, is scheduled to commence at 09:00hrs on October 3 with the first semi-final between the Zaheer Mohamed-led Zone ‘B’ and Zone ‘C’ to be captained by Nazir Khan Omar. Yadram Seemangal will skipper Zone ‘A’ against Videsh Lall’s Zone D in the day’s 2nd semi-final before the winners clash in the grand finale.
Because of the unavailability of the floodlights, the organisers have agreed to play the semi-finals over 15 overs before the 20/20 final is contested for the Busta trophy and $25,000 first prize.
The runner-up will take home the Grand Costal Inn trophy and $15,000 and tournament coordinator Jaigobin Mahabir, speaking at the launching of the competition at Enterprise on Thursday, encouraged the entire Village to lend their support to the venture.
Apart from the Guyana Beverage Company (which sponsors the Enterprise 1st division team under the Busta brand) and Grand Costal, Mahabir informed that the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports through Director of Sports Neil Kumar have also made a major contribution to the competition which was originally fixed for April.
“Neil Kumar has kept his promise and the Sports Ministry will provide all the trophies and balls while Ansa McAl has promised that all the profit from their Bar will go to our Library to buy books.
Busta will also have a soft drink Bar while the Crown Jammers Sound system will provide music for the spectators all day,” Mahabir informed.
Each team will wear a different color and M.A Ali has donated Blue shirts for Zone ‘A’ while former youth wicketkeeper Imtiaz Omar and his family will provide Green shirts for the Zone ‘C’ team. The uniforms of the other 2 Zones (‘D’ will wear yellow and ‘B’ red) are expected to be donated shortly Mahabir disclosed.
The leading run-scorer after each match will don a Yellow cap and the leading wicket-taker a Maroon cap which will be ‘gracefully passed on to the new leader’ after each game.
Rockaway Auto Sales will provide a bicycle for the Most Valuable Player in the competition while the leading wicket-taker will collect $5,000 compliments of former Guyana off-spinner and Radio commentator Sean Devers.
“This competition was organized to help find hidden talent in the Village and hopefully after the competition that talent can be harnessed and the youths can be taken in by the sports club.
The Ministry of Sports and the Education Ministry is making a desperate effort to revamp school cricket and in the old days that’s where the cricketers used to come from….the schools. We hope to find some young talent through this competition to make Enterprise cricket even stronger,” Mahabir said.
The coordinator said that the IPL in India has unearthed unknown players and said that his committee is still looking for a sponsor for a prize for the ‘Youth player’ of the tournament.
Mahabir noted that it was pleasing to see the old stalwarts of the village who entertainment in the field many years ago, among the audience on Thursday and even more heartening to see them still involved in the game from the sidelines.
Zone ‘A’ is made up from Reid Street to Park Street, Zone ‘B’ from Jagan Street to Market Street, Zone ‘C’ from Church Street to Forbes Street and Zone ‘D’ from Fernandes Street and the entire squatting area and Pay office street.
Guyana Beverage Company’s Shameeza Yadram presented the winner’s cheque on behalf of Busta while Grand Costal Inn’s Chandrika Persaud handed over the runner-up cheque.
