A group of top businesses in Guyana which banded together last year is helping to lead the fight against HIV/AIDS.
The Guyana Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GBCHA), during its first ever Annual General Meeting on Thursday last, at its Orange Walk, Bourda office, announced that it will be exploring new ways in assisting the private sector in getting information to the most at-risk persons.
Prominent banker, Amanda St Aubyn, who led the organisation since its founding on May 23, 2008, was also returned as Chairperson following elections.
GBCHA comprises of 40-plus prominent businesses including Republic Bank, Scotiabank, Continental Group of Companies, Banks DIH, John Fernandes Limited, Kaieteur News and Neal and Massy Group, among others.
The coalition was launched last year as an independent non-profit entity, continuing work upon the foundation laid by the first phase of the Guyana HIV/AIDS Reduction and Prevention Project (GHARP1). Its mandate: to co-ordinate and enhance the private sector response to the epidemic.
According to St Aubyn in her Chairperson’s report to members, the organisation has come a long way over the past year, completing the renovations on the offices and testing over 1100 persons at sites hosted by GBCHA members.
To date, 17 of the GBCHA members have signed workplace policies on HIV/AIDS in which 22,000 employees will be impacted as a result. The remaining members are in the process of drafting their policies.
Additionally, over 25 member companies have participated in workplace educational activities, facilitated through partnerships with local non-governmental organisations and reaching almost 7300 employees directly, the Chairperson said in her report.
The organisation is now awaiting the approval of a grant from USAID to continue its work.
Meanwhile, the GBCHA has been handed the task of hosting the Pan Caribbean Business Coalition (PCBC) in 2010, a premier event in the Caribbean HIV/AIDS calendar.
The Chairperson warned that the GBCHA is fully aware of the significant demand that exists within Guyana’s private sector for the types of services it now offers and urged for the maintenance of a committed, vibrant and active board and membership base.
During the AGM, it was also agreed to reduce the number of board members to nine.
In addition to St Aubyn, the following persons were also elected: Chris Fernandes of John Fernandes Limited, Jennifer Falconer of Vanessa Guyana Inc, David Bhola of the Neal and Massy Group, Dennis Morgan of Denmor Garment, Percival Boyce of Continental Group, Tracy Lewis of the Guyana Lottery Company, Andrew Astwood of the Guyana National Shipping Corporation and Patricia Chase-Greene of Banks DIH Limited.
