– Owner faces second charge
The New Court Yard was plunged into darkness last night after investigators of the Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) found the business with an illegal connection – the second time in months.
The owner of the popular Main Street night spot and restaurant, who is out of the country, is likely to be charged again and may face jail time or hefty fines.
Last night, a crew of GPL’s Loss Prevention Unit descended on the New Court Yard around 19:30 hrs disconnecting the power, leaving patrons in darkness, and GPL officials were convinced that the faulty, illegal connection could have caused a fire.
Crewmen found that the connection took a feed directly from the main lines and ran straight to the nightspot. There was no meter, as GPL had removed one from the New Court Yard several months ago after they found the nightspot with an illegal connection.
According to GPL officials, the owner was charged and placed before the courts after he failed to come to a payment arrangement after being assessed several millions of dollars for stealing current.
New Court Yard currently rents the facilities from a lawyer. Other offices are located in the same building, but these were not found to be in breach.
