Dexter Marques’ career was going nicely for four fights. In the first, he stopped Charlton Skeete in the first stanza and repeated that feat against Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers in his second bout. He then went on to pound out a unanimous decision over Rogers in a return fight some eight months afterwards.
Marques returned to his winning ways and stopped Paul Lewis (jnr), on his way to registering a flawless record of 4-0. Marques then issued a challenge to Leon Moore and after some hype, Moore accepted the offer. The rest is now history. Moore went on to knockout Marques in the second frame. Now, three months after that terrible experience, Marques gets ready to reenter the ring and repair his record. His opponent is the little heard of, Hewley Robinson.
Putting together the pieces and getting one’s career back on track is easier said than done for some boxers. Dexter Marques does not regard himself as just any boxer. Even though he lacks the requisite power to put away his opponents, the slim built fighter is classy and can dance circles around his opponents, presenting an elusive target.
Robinson has fought mostly in Barbados where he has compiled a record of 7 fights with 2 losses. Two of his 5 wins came by the knockout route. When Kaieteur Sport visited the Andrew ‘Sixhead Lewis’ Boxing Gym in Albouystown last week, Robinson, under the watchful eyes of Brian Barker had sparred ten rounds with ‘Deadly’ Denny Dalton and Shawn Pile. He appeared to be in top shape and has sent out a message to Marques to come prepared or suffer his second loss on the trot.
Even before he received this missive, Marques was training diligently since he realizes that a second loss could very well place his career at the crossroads. Last Tuesday afternoon the former bantamweight champ boxed half dozen rounds with former Fecarbox lightweight champion, Joseph Murray.
From all appearances Marques seems to have recovered from his last fight and is rearing to go. His coaches, Sebert Blake and Murray himself, are confident that he could pull off this fight. Apparently, Robinson has different ideas. He is going through a stiff regimen that suggests it may not be smooth sailing for the former bantamweight champion.
