To evaluate the effectiveness of integrated technologies and to improve Guyana’s capacity to respond to natural disasters, the United States Southern Command (US SOUTHCOM) yesterday donated first aid emergency equipment to the Civil Defence Commission (CDC).
The handing-over ceremony took place at CDC’s headquarters, Thomas Lands.
Director-General of CDC, Chabilall Ramsarup received the donation on behalf of the Government.
“We would like to thank the US SOUTHCOM for the presentation since it would go a far way in assisting us to respond promptly to natural disasters’.”
Lt. Col. Melba Hernandez, Military Liaison Officer, US Embassy, handed-over the items to Ramsarup.
“I am very pleased today to be handing this equipment to the CDC on behalf of the Commander of SOUTHCOM….We are very pleased to be working closely with them and we are looking forward to achieving an important function of the programme which is to enhance interoperability and support security co-operation.”
The items that were donated include: a solar pod, computer, two relief pods and solar equipment.
The US Southcom Science and Technology (S&T) programme supports the development of military capability to meet mission requirements.
It also conducts activities to support the nation’s advanced technology, enhance joint capabilities and increase interoperability with partner nations.
