West Berbice got the better of Upper Corentyne on first innings to clinch third place in the Republic Bank sponsored under-17 Inter-Zone tournament organised by the Berbice Cricket Board.
Playing at the area ‘H’ ground, West Berbice were led to victory by outstanding bowling from offspinner Renaldo Grovesnor who grabbed 5-32 and medium pacer Claude Marks 4-15.
Batting first after winning the toss, Upper Corentyne were dismissed for 94 in their first innings with only Tariq Chaitram 24, Tyrone Edwards and Marvin Harvey 17 each, reaching double figures.
In reply West Berbice found themselves in deep waters at 44-5 before Grovesnor who completed a brilliant all round performance with an aggressive 30 (2 sixes 2 fours) and Devindra Lalsa (26) guided them to 103 all out. Bowling for Upper Corentyne Marvin Harvey took 4-27, Permanand Narine 2-12 and Chaitram Naurang 2-27. Batting a second time nine runs in deficit Upper Corentyne reached 36-2 when the game ended. Charles Bowlin was left unbeaten on 17 while Trevor Thomas made 16. Bowling for West Berbice Rajin Kishun took both wickets for 14 runs.
Public Relations Officer of the BCB Hilbert Foster at the presentation ceremony, hailed both teams for a well contested game and for their commitment despite not making the finals.
He congratulated West Berbice for winning the 3rd prize while he challenged Upper Corentyne to lift their game to win the tournament in 2010.
