Launches historic 10th annual Review Magazine
Club President Keith Foster (left) presents the first copy of the Magazine to Mr. Wynston Robertson of GT&T Cellink
“Try to inculcate the habit of real professionals from early in your career. If you don’t give your best in preparing, then you are not giving the best you can in matches. It is said that amateurs practices until they get it right while real professionals practice until they never get it wrong. We are what we repeatedly do – Excellence then, is not an act but a habit.”
Those were the words of former West Indies vice Captain Roger Harper during a well received feature address at the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club 19th Anniversary Celebration Luncheon at the club’s head office, Rose Hall Corentyne.
Harper whose address was titled, ‘In pursuit of excellence’ advised the attentive audience which included club executives, members and sponsors, that every dream can be achieved once people are prepared to stop dreaming, wake up and get to work. To get something you never had, you have to do something you’re never done.
The Special Luncheon was hosted to mark the RHTY&SC’s 19th Anniversary after its formation in 1990 by the three-time Guyana and Commonwealth Youth Service Awardee, St. Francis Community Developers.
Secretary/CEO of the Club Hilbert Foster in reviewing the club’s history and achievements, hailed its accomplishments as simply unbelievable, noting that they are the best in Guyana through hard work, commitment, honesty, visionary leadership and the support of numerous donors and sponsors.
Among the achievements highlighted during the years are, national cricket champions in 2004 and 2005; winning a total of 23 major cricket tournaments, producing five senior national cricketers; sixteen at the national junior level and a total of 46 overall for Berbice; raising and investing over $15Million into the restoration of Area ‘H’ Ground; annual anti-drugs/pro-education campaign, annual $5Million charity programme; annual cricket academy; female cricket team which has already produced three West Indies players apart from hosting numerous cricket tournaments and awards ceremonies. President of the club Keith Foster, who is also head of the Berbice Cricket Board in brief remarks, reflected on the formation of the club and the many challenges it faced to survive in the first few years.
He thanked the club’s many sponsors for staying the course over the years and expressed confidence that the club will continue to grow and expand in the future.
During the ceremony, the club also launched the 10th Edition of its Annual Youth Review Magazine and dubbed it as an historic achievement.
The magazine which is the only of its kind published by any club in Guyana, details in full, the activities and achievements of the RHTYSC.
Editor and Club Secretary Hilbert Foster declared that it contains articles on activities of the Club in 2008/2009. Special thanks were extended to sponsors of the magazine, especially GT&T Cellink, a major donor to the printing of the magazine, along with co-sponsors Banks DIH Ltd. Also recognised for their sterling contributions over the years were Western Union, Pepsi and the Bank of Nova Scotia.
Hailing the contribution of the main sponsor, Foster in congratulating GT&T, refereed to them as the foundation of the RHTY&SC since the company invested millions over the last decade. Special thanks were extended to GT&T’s Marketing Director Wyston Robertson who was described as a true friend of the club.
Robertson, who spoke briefly at the magazine launching, hailed the club as a special one and noted that to produce 10 consecutive magazines is no easy feat. GT&T he said was pleased to be associated with the RHTY&SC as it always provided the goods for sponsors and was always in pursuit of excellence in every project it undertakes.
The magazine would be presented free of cost to club members, sponsors, supporters, schools, other youth and sports clubs, Government Ministries, local Embassies, High Commissions and Guyanese living overseas.
