– claims assault by female rank prompted action
Mark Bannister yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson for allegedly escaping from police custody.
It is alleged that the offence was committed on September 3.
According to the 21-year-old Bannister, a female officer was “boxing me up jus’ suh dry, and I walk out and go home.” He claims to have sustain injuries to his mouth and refused to remain in the custody of the police under such treatment. “Police buss up me mouth…..so I went home”
Bannister explained to the court that he does not live a far from the Providence Police Station, where he claims to have been held.
The Police Prosecutor, however, told the court that the police had received a report of unlawful wounding made against the defendant. As a result, Bannister was arrested and taken to the Alberttown Police Station where he was placed in custody “on the prisoners’ bench.”
Further reports stated that Bannister later ran out of the station and made good his escape. He was subsequently arrested and told of the offence he committed, to which he allegedly admitted.
The offence carries a penalty of two years’ imprisonment, but Chief Magistrate Robertson decided to impose a fine of $25,000 on the defendant. Should he be unable to pay the fine he will be required to spend six months in prison.
