When Ray Joseph spearheads the Marlon Tucker led West Indies Under-19 pace attack in 1980, against young England, Keen Joseph was not born but his parents probably witnessed Ray’s performance and as cricket enthusiasts ensured that if blessed with a boy child the Ray Joseph and West Berbice show will continue.
Well their dream has come through. Keon, who for the second consecutive year tormented Regional Under-19 batsmen with express pace, has been rewarded and has now joined a distinct band of Guyanese pacemen who had the honour of representing the Region at the Under-19 level.
The first was East Bank’s, Sydney Matthews, who was part of the inaugural Under-19 tour of the United Kingdom 1970. GCC Eion Grant emulated Matthews when he gained selection to tour the UK 1978.
Ray Joseph followed 1980 against young England. Colin Stuart continued the tradition when he toured the UK in 1993. GCC’s Reon King was the next Guyanese paceman in 1995 against young England; King again was selected when the Gareth Breese led regional youngsters toured Pakistan and Bangladesh October/November 1995.
Essequibian Rayon Thomas added his name 2001 when the Brentnol Parchment led side toured the UK. East Bank’s Eion Katchy was selected for the second ICC Youth World Cup in South Africa 1998 but was not allowed to participate because he and several other members of the original squad were deemed over age.
Of the players mentioned above, only Colin Stuart and Reon King played Test and ODIs. DCC’s Charles Lloyd was named in a 14 man squad which was selected after the 1972 Benson and Hedges series in Barbados, but he migrated before the Regional Under-19 youngsters engaged Australia, the Test side in a two day match at the Kensington Oval in February of 1973.
