As 2nd round starts tonight
The battle for quarter-finals berths in the 6th Annual Mackeson/English/Kashif & Shanghai knock-out Futsal tournament commences this evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall following the conclusion of opening round play on Monday night at the same venue.
In a riveting and exhausting contest, Plaisance fired past the Guyana Defence Force 5-4 in extra time. Alpha United made light work of Victoria Kings 4-0, Sunburst Camptown got past Mahaica Determinators 4-2 and Black Pearl did no wrong in their 3-1 whipping of Linden’s number one side, Milerock.
But it was the GDF/Plaisance affair that had the crowd going wild. The East Coast side from the onset looked business like and had one eye focused on the second round. They did not allow the Army to dictate the flow of the game as they cantered into the lead in the 7th minute through a Chris Cox goal.
Seven minutes on, the Army were brought back into the game when Stellon David blasted the first of his hat-trick and in the 18th minute, he pushed them ahead for the first time with his second. The Soldiers even stretched the lead by two goals when David completed his hat-trick in the 20th minute.
The GDF’s reign on the game at that point did not intimidate Plaisance as they continued to take the fight to the men in green and red. Kevin Richards in the 22nd minute reduced the deficit by one and Troy Charles with the first of his double in the 26th minute drew Plaisance level, pushing the game into extra time.
By now, both teams were hot and going at each other but the East Coast side, bursting with confidence, transformed their good run into goals when it mattered. Charles netted his second in the 33rd minute with teammate Maurice Younge consolidating their position one minute later.
GDF were able to narrow the lead when Marlon Benjamin scored in the 35th minute but with one minute to game time, it was too late for the Army. Plaisance will now face Linden’s Silver Shattas in their group of 16 match-up.
Alpha United were kept at bay by Victoria Kings for the entire first half (15 minutes) but were eventually able to break down the Kings’ tough defence in the second half, banging in four unanswered goals. Alpha Sylvester (18), Shawn Bishop (23), Gordon Henry (26) and a defence error in the 27th minute accounted for Alpha’s goals.
Camptown too, found it easy in their clash with Mahaica Determinators as they won the contest 4-1. Reshawn Sandiford scored a brace (11, 23) with one each from Tito Adams in the 8th and Norris Carter in the 16th minute.
Black Pearl set the night off to a blazing start when they out hustled Linden’s Milerock. The game was effectively settled in the first half when all the goals were scored.
Captain Lomell Johnson sent Black Pearl on their way in the 2nd minute. Tychius Mc Almond in the 11th minute and Mark Carter in the 12th were the other players on target for the winners. Milerock pulled one back though the efforts of Steve Brewley in the 13th.
Milerock tried their best to find goals but the Pearls were too good in defence on the night.
Meanwhile, group of 16 rivalries tonight brings together Uprising, who mauled Den Amstel in their opening game 11-0, taking on Riddim Squad who took care of Bakewell Topp XX 3-2.
Beacon will come up against Winners Connection and the Brazilians match skills with Fruta Conquerors in what is expected to be a keen tussle.
