Egged on by a throng of vociferous supporters, Victoria Kings FC defied the odds and on the back of a 88th minute goal off the boot of Mortimer Murray, dented the pride of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) when the Guyana Football Federation Super League competition continued at the Georgetown Football Club Ground (GFC), Sunday evening last.
In a game that was as ferocious as it was skillful and punctuated by the issuance of four yellows and one red card by referee, Mark Young, the East Coast team held their nerve to triumph even as fortunes fluctuated.
From the onset it was evident that the game would have been a good one as the soldiers, who started out as the favourites, attacking menacingly and enjoying the lion’s share of ball possession.
Their dexterity and determination saw them quickly invading the Victoria King’s goal. On one such occasion, Delroy Deen gratefully accepted a pass from the right wing, transferred the ball from his head and struck with ferocity. His teammates must have felt disheartened when the ball flew over the uprights.
Fortunes then fluctuated as both teams enjoyed a fair degree of ball possession.
In the meantime, the ‘King’s’ men, singled out GDF star striker, Stellon David for special treatment, thwarting his every move. Eventually, the skillful striker managed to break loose and sent a powerful kick to the opposition’s goal.
The ball had success written all over it until Victoria King’s custodian, Andrew Williams, flung himself upwards and tipped the ball over the crossbar.
As the battle for supremacy continued, the game developed into a physical warfare and the referee was kept very busy. On several occasions, he was forced to issue yellow cards to offending players on both sides, yet the two teams unyieldingly attacked with gusto as each attempted to seize the initiative.
Both teams were offered several goal scoring opportunities on both sides but botched the chances and at the half time whistle the game remained at a nil all stalemate.
Moments into the second half, Victoria Kings received the perfect opportunity to surge ahead when Aubrey Gibson collected an oblique pass meters away from the Army’s goal mouth. However, he failed to position himself quickly and could only offer a tame strike to the goal which the Army custodian gleefully scooped up.
As the game neared completion with both teams still searching for the winning goal, Victoria Kings summoned Orin Elias from the bench. He wasted little time in fielding Mortimer Murray with a superb offering and the Victoria striker drove with pin point accuracy to register an 88th minute success which held firm to the final whistle.
Earlier in the night, Riddim Squad FC inflicted a 2 nil whipping to Houston Stars FC in their 1st division encounter at the same venue.
Delon John, in the 41st minute and Michael Charles in the 52nd did the trick for the East Bank team.
The action continues this Sunday with several matches around Georgetown and its environs and Linden.
