Region Six prepares to host Nat’l Schools’ Athletics C/ships

ALBION, CORENTYNE – Preparation is well underway for the staging of the 49th Annual Schools’ Track and Field, Swimming and Cycling Championship.

This year, Region Six-East Berbice/Corentyne is the host for the event which is expected to attract 1,600 students from across Guyana, between November 9th and 13th.

Region Six Education Officer, Shafiran Bhajan, indicated that this is the first time the launching of the championships has taken place in Region Six.

According to her, the Local Organising Committee for the event is headed by Region Six Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha. The Public Relations Officer is Christopher Holder.

There are seven sub-committees, each with their own chairperson.

The Accommodation Committee is headed by Region Six Vice-Chairman, Dennis Deroop. Other sub-committees include the Infrastructure, which is led by Region Six Engineer, Paul Lyken, Health, headed by Chief Executive Officer of the Berbice Health Authority, Dr. Vishwa Mahadeo and Security under the stewardship of Commander of Division ‘B’ of the Guyana Police Force Assistant Commissioner George Alexander Vyphuis.

The Guyana Power and Light, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company and the Guyana Water Inc. are also part of the Infrastructure Committee.

The seven sub-bodies have already held meetings to fine tune their plans.

The Cropper, Belvedere, and Albion Primary Schools would comprise the Games’ Village. This means they are to be upgraded to stand up to the required functions. Kitchen and sanitary facilities are some of the facilities to be installed at these venues.

On Thursday, the 49th Annual Track and Field, Swimming, and Cycling Championship was launched at the Albion Community Centre Ground.

There, President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU), Colwyn King and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Pulandar Kandhi, handed over the Games Flag to Region Six Chairman, Zulfikar Mustapha.

The theme chosen this year is ‘Athletes from 16 districts – Competing for Top Honours.’

GTU President, Colwyn King, pointed out it would take $100M to sponsor the 16 teams for the Championship.

This would include meals, transportation, insurance, and other paraphernalia. He also alluded to the lack of training facilities in Guyana. King said this is one time when all stakeholders must lend their support.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Pulandar Kandhi , lauded the Department of Education in Region Six for the performance at this year’s Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate Examination (CSEC).

“This year is remarkable in terms of its improvement. This speaks well for the Region and the country as a whole.”
