Rain ruins GCA Cellink 1st division 3-day cricket final
GNIC, Everest declared joint winners
Torrential rain in Georgetown yesterday washed out the entire final day’s play in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Cellink sponsored 3-day 1st division cricket final between Everest and GNIC at Bourda.
When bad light stopped play on the 2nd day on Saturday, Everest were 235-4, enjoying a lead of 98 runs after GNIC were bowled out for 137. This was after the 1st day was also washed out without a ball being bowled.
Waterlogged! A water logged section of Bourda just in front of the dilapidated Clive Lloyd ‘Double Decker’ stand which is being demolished.
Although the ‘square’ and bowler’s run-ups were covered yesterday, overnight and morning rain left several sections of Bourda in a soggy condition while areas just in front of the Southern, Western and Northern boundaries were underwater when the umpires called off the match just before lunch.
Former West Indies Under-19 batsman Rajendra Chandrika was unbeaten on 150 and his unfinished 5th wicket partnership with Troy Gonsalves (28*) was already worth 99 runs.
Ex-Guyana Under-19 pacer Leon Scott had done the bulk of the damage with the ball for Everest by claiming 5-65 in his first games since his return from Scotland, while Joseph Perry enjoyed a good day behind the stumps with four catches in the GNIC innings.
Only an outright win would have given either team sole ownership of the title and Everest in particular would have been disappointed with the inclement weather which resulted in the finalist being declared joint champions.
GNIC, who badly missed the presence of their former Test off-spinner Clyde Butts who is in South Africa with the depleted West Indies team for the Champions Trophy, retains the title they shared with Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) last year while it was disclosed that because Everest gained a first innings lead they will get to keep the trophy for the first half of the period until the next year’s final.
GCA President Alfred Mentore congratulated the teams for reaching the final yesterday and lamented that it was a pity that the weather robbed everyone of what could have been a pulsating last day as Everest pressed for a win and GNIC tried to come from behind.
MSC, who won the league stage of the competition before going down to GNIC in the semi-finals, will collect the League Champions trophy.
The official presentation is scheduled for Friday at 17:00hrs at Bourda and apart from the presentation of the winner’s trophies, several awards for outstanding performances throughout the only 2-innings first division competition in Guyana this year, will also be made.
With the Demerara selectors sitting this week to pick the Demerara team for the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) 4-team 4-day competition which starts next Tuesday, it is expected that performances in the Cellink competition will be an important yardstick in the final composition of the 4-day Demerara team.
According to the GCA, members of Everest, GNIC and MSC along with individual prize winners are expected to be attired in their ‘whites’ (cricket clothes) for the Friday’s Presentation ceremony.
