Jermaine Otto, 20, a labourer of 733 East Ruimveldt Georgetown, was on Friday sentenced to five years in jail by Magistrate Chandra Sohan when he appeared before him at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty to the charge of escaping from lawful custody on May 29, this year.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Roberto Figueira, told the court that on the day in question, Otto was being held at the Central Police Station on a charge of receiving stolen property. Whilst in the lock up, he complained of feeling unwell due to a recent surgery he had. The ranks took him out of the cell and placed him to sit on the bench in the Inquiries Office and were in the process of making arrangements for him to be transported to the New Amsterdam Hospital, when he suddenly scaled the counter and sprinted out of the station.
He was on the run until the police got wind of his whereabouts and apprehended him in East La Penitence on September 2nd.
In court, the convict begged the Magistrate to see with him and have some mercy, stating, “I am not doing well at all.”
Prosecutor Figueira in response urged the court to impose the full penalty on the convict. He said that the man, though complaining of being unwell, escaped from no other place but the Police Station.
Figueira said the man used his devious, conniving tact to trick the police and capitalised on their generosity. The prosecutor noted, for a sick man, the haste and speed with which Otto scaled the counter and exited the compound is testimony that he was not ill.
“If he was well we would not like to see what he would do,” the prosecutor told the court.
Figueira also noted that the convict was on the run since May and was only apprehended a few days ago in his home town having a ‘nice time’.
