Yvonne Ghir-Somar, an English teacher of the Diamond Community High School carted off the honours when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players hosted the National Novices Championships at the Georgetown Cricket Club Ground, Shivnarine Chanderpaul Street yesterday morning.
She won all four of her games and amassed a positive spread of 303 to relegate Cyril Thomas (3 games and a positive spread of 169) to second place while Matthew Gaul sealed off the podium positions with 2 games and a positive spread of 168.
Ricaldo Purnwasi won 2 games with a positive spread of 53 to take the fourth place, while Randy Ramnarain (2 games and a negative spread of 14) and Marlon Munroe (2 games and a negative spread of 35), ended in fifth and sixth positions, respectively.
Thomas was later awarded a special prize for forming 4 bingos, the most by any player. His winning bingos were sliding, conners, attuned and wasting.
Ghir-Somar won her games against Chelsea Weeks (133), Gaul (26), Thomas (50) and Randy Ramnarain. The loss against Ghir-Somar proved costly for Thomas who went on to defeat Ramnarain (3), Omari Dunn (151) and Gaul (65). Gaul won against Ricardo Purnwasi (144) and Munroe (15) but lost to Ghir-Somar (26) and Thomas (65).
While Ghir-Somar won handsomely, the tournament was keenly contested and at the beginning of the final round, four of the players, Gaul, Thomas, Munroe and Purnwasi had won 2 games apiece which meant that anyone of them could have won the second place slot. In the end it was Thomas who held his nerves to secure the accolade.
The winners were presented with trophies donated by members of the business community.
Meanwhile, President of the GASP, Moen Gafoor, is once again soliciting the support of the public as his organization launches its fund raising raffle later this week.
Monies accrued from the raffle will be used to facilitate national champion, Abigail McDonald’s trip to the prestigious World Scrabble championships in Malaysia later this year.
