It is said that the sun in Guyana, when at its hottest, does not shine, but scorches. This past Saturday was no exception. It was hot day and even within the Kaieteur News office, the heat could be felt seeping through the air-conditioning.
It was a quiet Saturday afternoon within the Kaieteur News office. The sun was out in all its glory, reflecting its heat off the corrugated zinc sheets of the buildings outside.
The asphalted street which runs in front of the Kaieteur News, Saffon Street, had only a few vehicles driving slowly by.
A few fellows were standing outside finding some shade from the hot sun. As you enter into the Kaieteur News front doors, there is to the far left a stairway leading upstairs. At the head of this stairway is a long corridor with windows looking outwards giving a splendid view of the Demerara River.
Two staff members from the upper floor of Kaieteur News came out noticed the boss man standing by the window at the head of the stairs, pensively looking out towards the Demerara River. There was a contemplative look on his face.
“Is Adam he miss!” said the first to the second, referring to Uncle Adam who is presently overseas.
“Nah it can’t be Adam, he just come off the phone with the man, “said the second staff member. ” The two of them does chat every day. “
“That prove that he miss Adam,” replied the first.”But why is he staring so intently at the Demerara River?”
Just then they were joined by a third staff member who kicked into the conversation. “The boss man has problems. He getting sue left, right and center. One man sue him for five hundred Michael. Another one wants forty million dollars in compensation. If the Courts rule against the boss, he will have to sell his whole business. He will even have to sell the street in front of Kaieteur News to help pay the bill.”
“Boy, even if he sell that he cannot come up with five hundred Michael. He gun have to sell the bakery opposite, plus the pavement and also Toolsie building at the back to pay off that judgment”
“But why is he staring so intently at the Demerara River?” asked the second staff member.
The third man answered, ” He probably studying how much he gun get for the Demerara River.”
“He will have to talk to the Privatisation Unit to sell that river,” quipped the first.
The third man replied, “Remember years ago, they had a man sell Parliament Buildings.”
“The way things going who knows, the boss man might even sell the Office of the President, with Jagdeo inside, just to cover his legal fees,” joked the third person.
“What about Dr. Randy, he gun get sell the building with him inside too?”
“Nah, we will leave him for the Peeper to deal with.”
The second fellow chimed in, “The Peeper say that he not paying no heed to Dr. Randy and his fulminations against the squadron. He says if he replies he only dignifying the Guyana Chronicle. And he don’t want to be helping the Chronicle sell any newspaper, so he not replying to anything in the Guyana Chronicle.
” True, the Peeper say Dr. Randy has to come better before he replies to him. He says Dr. Randy needs to go back and come again. He not up to scratch as yet. But if he send he letters to the Kaieteur News, the Peeper will reply and give him a free lesson in the theory of social capital,” said the third person.
Just as the three staff members were about to move off they noticed the boss man move his head and began to look at the La Penitence Market.
“Like he planning to sell that too”, one of them remarked.
Then the boss took a pair of binoculars out of his pocket and placed it to his eyes.
The three staff members wondered what he was looking at this time. One of them finally summoned the courage to ask, ” Boss is what you looking at now?”
Without shifting his gaze Glenn said, “I looking at Sanata!”
