Berbicians Tremaine Smartt and Shemaine Campbell have been named in the West Indies women’s team which will play four One-Day Internationals and three T20 Internationals in South Africa next month.
The 14-member side, ranked 5th internationally in both ODI and 20/20 female cricket, will be led by Trinidad and Tobago wicket-keeper Merissa Aguilleira while her T&T teammate, off-spinner Anisa Mohammed is the Vice Captain. Four players without international experience, including the Guyanese pair have been included while most of the players named participated in the last Women’s World 20/20 Cup in England.
The Clyde Butts-led selection panel selected the team after watching the Regional Women’s competition in Guyana last month and four debutants are T&T’s Britney Cooper, who was the MVP of the Guyana tournament, her fellow T&T player teenager Amanda Samaroo and the two Guyanese.
Campbell was surprisingly left out of the West Indies 20/20 team to the Women’s 20/20 World Cup after
scoring the most runs in the last Regional Female Under-19 series, but failed to reproduce that form in last month’s competition. But her reputation, even at just 16, as one of the best batters in the region and her ability to bowl leg-spin, medium pace and wicket keep, made her selection predictable.
Smartt, who played at the first division level this year for New Amsterdam side Bermine, was the leading Guyanese player and one of the top all-rounders in the Regional competition with her medium pace and level-headed batting. Her call-up is an early birthday gift since she turns 24 on Thursday.
Jamaican Chadean Nation returns to the regional side after last playing in 2008 while the ‘evergreen’ Barbadian Pamela Lavine has also been included. The 40 year-old Lavine, a cousin of former West Indies Test player Gordon Greenidge, scored the only century in the regional competition in Guyana.
The team is dominated by players from Regional Women’s champions T&T and Jamaica who lost to T&T in the final at Bourda.
The West Indian ladies play a warm-up match against Western Cape X1 on October 14 before taking on South Africa in the 1st ODI on October 16 at Boland Bank Park.
The West Indies Women’s Team: Merissa Aguilleira (Captain), Anisa Mohammed (Vice Captain), Shemaine Campbell, Britney Cooper, Shanel Daley, Deandra Dottin, Cordel Jack, Stacy Ann King, Pamela Lavine, Chadean Nation, Amanda Samaroo, Tremayne Smartt, Shakera Selman, Stafanie Taylor.
