…as Operation New Horizon 2009 Mission concludes
President Bharrat Jagdeo stands with Charge d’Affaires, US Embassy, Karen Williams, after unveiling the cornerstone to the East La Penitence Health Centre yesterday.
The handing over of a Health Centre in East La Penitence to the Government of Guyana, yesterday, signalled the conclusion of the New Horizon humanitarian work in Guyana for 2009.
The facility located at Lot 1 Vlissengen Road is one of several tangible efforts by the US Military New Horizons Mission to Guyana and the occasion was dubbed another US/ Guyana endeavour to further strengthen relations.
Charge d’Affaires, US Embassy, Karen Williams said the occasion was a celebration of what has been accomplished in the last three months such as the improved health and well-being of the hundreds of community members in East La Penitence.
The diplomat noted that from yesterday residents would have easy access to quality health care. This follows the completion of a new Nursery School in Bel Air and the renovation of another school in Timehri.
Williams encouraged the gathering to “celebrate the hundreds of Guyanese who received medical and dental care from the New Horizons medical practitioners at the temporary clinics in several locations in Guyana.”
She said, too, that above all, Guyana could celebrate the outstanding cooperation that has made the many US/Guyana joint ventures successful. Williams noted that no endeavour of the magnitude completed in three months would be possible without the partnership established before and during the mission.
She expressed gratitude to the organizations and branches of government that offered time and energy in dealing with the many challenges along the way. She also singled out the health ministry for the collaborations and guidance through the preparatory phase as well as during the medical and construction activities. Gratitude was also extended to the Guyana Defence Force as well as the Mayor of Georgetown and his officials.
In extending gratitude she also said “the US is committed to continue this type and degree of engagement, in which we work with the people and government of Guyana to help improve the lives of citizens.
Some of the residents, who attended the handing over ceremony in invited comments, said they are grateful that they finally have a health centre in proximity to their homes. They said it would especially help the elderly in the area to be given much faster attention as opposed to them having to walk long distances to be seen and tended to.
President Bharrat Jagdeo was among the presenters who toured the facility after the ceremonial ribbon-cutting yesterday.
