Bryden & Fernandes Inc. promises continued support to GFA
By Franklin Wilson
High achievers of the inaugural Trix Under-17 football competition organised by the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) and sponsored by Bryden & Fernandes Inc., local agents for the Trix Drink Mix, received their prizes yesterday at the sponsors Head Office following a simple ceremony.
Tournament champions Fruta Conquerors, walked away with two of the three individual awards. Joshua Brown was voted as the competition’s most valuable player with teammate Dennis Edwards copping the best goalkeeper prize.
Uprising’s Stephan Dickenson ended as the highest goal scorer with a total of six goals. Conquerors had defeated old rivals Camptown in the final while Georgetown Football Club got the better of Uprising to take the third place trophy. Uprising received the most disciplined team trophy by virtue of attracting the least amount of yellow cards and not a single red card.
Marketing Coordinator of Bryden’s & Fernandes Inc. Mark Kendall in his remarks conveyed his company’s delight and congratulations to the players and clubs that participated pointing out that it takes skill, discipline, dedication, energy , time and the love for football to reach the top.
“We are happy to see our young people utilising their energy in a positive manner and are privileged to exhibit their talents and skills in such an arena. We encourage each player to continue striving for excellence and make valuable efforts to be an example for peers in their communities and generations to come.”
Kendall also commended the GFA for the dedication and hard work put into making the tournament which was played on a round-robin/knock-out basis and attracted twelve teams, a success. He noted that it allowed the youths to have a recreational event which kept them physically and mentally focused.
“The management of Bryden & Fernandes Inc. would like to thank the GFA for their support and cooperation during the tournament and we look forward to a continued relationship with the organization.”
GFA President troy Mendonca gave an overview of the tournament pointing out that a total of 107 goals were scored in the tournament, 69 in the round-robin phase and 38 during the knock-out. Twelve teams participated and were placed in three groups of four each. Pele’s 14-0 mauling of Flamingo was the largest margin of victory recorded for the competition.
Mendonca applauded the sponsor for showing the fortitude in partnering with the GFA at a challenging time. He said that the tournament afforded the players the opportunity to showcase their talent and love for the sport.
“This competition also enabled us (GFA) to build and strengthen our foundation for the youths at this level and at the same time keep them away from the distraction and many ills of affecting the society.”
Mendonca too, like Kendall, was looking forward to a strengthened and continued partnership with Bryden and Fernandes Inc.
