– sustains broken legs
Fifty-nine year-old Mocha Arcadia resident Overton Douglas is hospitalised with both his legs broken, and suffering from head and other injuries, after being hit by a speeding minibus in the village on Tuesday.
The father of one, who is blind, was reportedly heading to his home at lot 31 Norton Street at about 16:30hrs when he was hit and dragged along the roadway for several metres.
When the minibus was finally brought to a halt, the man had lost a large section of hair and skin from his head while the driver reportedly exited the vehicle and ran away. It is alleged that he is actually the conductor of the vehicle who was making rounds in the village while the driver was otherwise engaged.
This publication understands that he did not offer any assistance to the wounded man known in the village as ‘Congo man’ who lay bleeding on the road for a while before he was taken to the hospital. The relatives of the injured man said yesterday the conductor turn driver visited their home and was extremely rude before he was taken into police custody.
At the Georgetown Hospital yesterday relatives told Kaieteur News that they do not know for how long Douglas will be hospitalised, but noted that the scenario of conductors taking the wheel whenever minibuses arrive in the village is a dangerous and continuous practice.
In the village yesterday villagers also voiced their concern, and called for police intervention to erase the risks of people being hit by driving conductors. “Is every time the drivers reach Mocha they does come out the bus and let the conductor drive and is bare speeding does take place in here.”
The injured man is one of several persons hit by driving conductors in the village. Prior to this incident, a woman was hit by another unlicensed individual, a conductor, and was hospitalised.
