After some three months of hectic activity, the 2009 Courts Pee Wee football championship concluded with a thrilling match between Santos and Conquerors Football Clubs at the Banks DIH Ground Saturday evening last. Santos eventually prevailed by dint of an overtime goal off the boot of Alwyn Williams.
The third place playoff between the Renaissance FC and Uprising FC was just as entertaining with the latter team winning 3-2 on penalty kicks.
Despite their 4th place finish, the Renaissance FC came in for high kudos from Vice Chairman of the PNCR, Dr George Norton, on behalf of that political organization.
After observing the team’s performance during the tournament Dr Norton felt obliged to render support.
The doctor said that although the team did not win the championship, the young footballers had created quite a stir.
He felt that having contested for the third place speaks a lot for the team’s resilience since they were not expected to reach that far in the tournament.
So impressed with the team’s performance was Mr Norton that he decided to donate a set of football gears to the club.
The team received balls, trunks, shin pads and jerseys among other gear. Dr Norton promised future assistance.
In brief remarks Dr Norton congratulated the team on their sterling performance during the just concluded tournament. He told the footballers that he plans to continue along this vein even as he urged them to continue training hard.
Dr Norton also voiced the hope that more females are attracted to the club.
