Old Fort tightened their grip on the John Fernandes Insurance Services Ltd Second Division Hockey Competition when they scored a narrow 3-2 win over Carib Degenerates yesterday, at the GCC ground.
On target for the winners were Jason DeSantos, who netted a brace in the 7th and 27 minutes along with a single strike from Shamar Pemberton’s 37th minute effort, while Brian Asregado (5th) and Sheldon Corlette (15th) were the goal-scorers for the losers.
In the other game that was played over at the Uitvlugt ground, Hikers defeated Western Dragons 3-1 with Robert France, A. Pemberton and Kenny Kansanally, being the men on target. Deon Bransford responded for the hosts.
The Old Fort versus Degenerates match-up saw the veteran unit take the lead through Asregado, who collected a pass from Rawl Davson and smashed a shot past the Old Fort custodian.
DeSantos responded two minutes later when he latched onto a pass delivered from the right side and hit a powerful shot past the Degenerates goalkeeper to level the scores.
However, Degenerates regained the lead shortly after through Corlette, who deflected a pass past a transfixed Old Fort keeper.
Degenerates led 2-1 at the break. On the resumption, Old Fort got the equaliser when DeSantos after receiving a feed from Dwight McCalman off a short corner blasted his effort into the back of the nets.
Both teams attacked with ferocity after then, but it would be Old Fort who took the ascendancy through substitute Pemberton, who easily tucked in a deflection off a pass from McCalman that was partially saved.
Degenerates went on an all-out offensive, but stout defending by the Old Fort unit nullified their attacks and when the final whistle came they maintained their advantage to increase their lead in the tournament.
Old Fort now have ten points and they are followed by Hikers on five, Degenerates on three, GCC on one and Western Dragons, who’re yet to enter the standings.
