Dear Editor,
As a concerned Guyanese I am appalled at the crime rate in my country today. Years ago it was white and blue collar crime, but now it is crime wholesale.
Crime thrives only on a society if it is nurtured and fathered by the said society, but I still have faith in democracy in dear land of Guyana. I remember that we once sang lustily (Dear Land of Guyana and said the national pledge) with pride.
In 1970 two others and myself went abroad and studied in (Mexico, USA etc. and we had the opportunity to meet with some Senators all who praised the Republic of Guyana and wished the best for it then
I can remember Mr. Cecil De Caries, God bless his soul, saying to me at the Georgetown Club, “Do not let us give up on Guyana”.
Good citizens of Guyana do not give up on your country, it is ours we must take it away from those who enjoy a life of crime in our society.
Guyana does not belong to the crime lords of the underworld; it is ours, it is the property of all Guyanese.
Guyanese brothers and sisters of all races, crime is nurtured by the insane and corrupt ones, who only seek power and this should not be condoned by any of us in this society of ours.
I can remember that a friend who had to carry a baseball bat in his vehicle to protect himself from the ‘hooligans’ we have in our society.
Today we must as a people take back our country from the crime lords, who act as if they are above the law. Some of these said crime lords underestimate society and they should not be allowed to engulf us in this democracy.
We must come together as one people with one destiny and our goal must be to take back Guyana from the crime lords.
None of us is immune from this scourge in our society today we must act now.
David Noel
