Vigilance clinch Buxton final spot in front of large crowd
Amelia’s Ward will clash with Half Mile/1 Mile combined in a quarter-final match of the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport Inter-Block Football championship at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground today.
The key clash is set to kick off at 7:30pm and so intriguing is the encounter that former national midfielder and sharpshooter and current Upper Demerara Football Association president, Brian Joseph is set to pull on his boots for the Ward team. He will get support from Travis Waterton, another former national player, Marlon Simon, Jermaine Batson and Ray Fraser among others.
Parliamentary Secretary in the Sports Ministry Steve Ninvalle will be on hand for today’s contest. Ninvalle missed the opening after being ‘under the weather’ for a few days. The Half Mile/1 Mile combination poses a serious threat with army players Steve Brewley and Marlon Maxius along with Kevin Lane in their line-up.
Amelia’s Ward overran Speightland 6-0 on Saturday in their last encounter to secure their quarter-final spot. Simon (75), Waterton (14, 69), Batson (6), Ezera Green (45) and Fraser (50) were on target for the Ward.
In another game played, Blue Berry Hill had to fight, coming from behind to turn back the challenge of Canvas City Block 22 by a 4-2 margin. Eon Bristol (20) and Mark Moses (26) put Block 22 in the lead, but BBH fought back, exploding to hammer home four unanswered goals.
On target were Malvin Benn with a double in the 47th and 65th minutes, Mark Liddel (45) and Ossie Hale (55).
Meanwhile, the Vigilance ground on the East Coast saw one of the largest crowds at the venue to witness a keen semi-final contest between Company Front, who defeated Red Street in the Buxton leg of the competition on penalties to clinch a spot in the final.
The game was locked at 1-1 at the end of regulation play and had to be decided on penalty kicks which Company Front won 2-1. Terrence Bacchus (17) for Company and Simba Carmicheal (23) for Red Street were the goal scorers in regulation play.
Company will now collide with Vigilance in the final on Sunday at the Vigilance ground and another massive crowd is anticipated.
Vigilance claimed a place in the final beating Annandale 2-1 thanks to goals from Jermaine Castello and Clyde Andries. Kevin Samuels had put Annandale on the score sheet.
