Former West Indies Test player Ryan Ramdass retuned to local cricket with an accomplished unbeaten 112 for Everest, while national opener Shemroy Barrington made 105 for Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) as action continued in the Demerara zone of the National Neal & Massy first division 40 overs cricket competition yesterday.
At Everest, Ramdass, who played a single Test and one ODI in Sri Lanka in 2005, hit 5 fours and 3 sixes and got support from Abilash Dookie (36) and Surendra Hiralall (31) as Everest reached 244-5 off their allotted 40 overs.
The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) in reply were blown away for 81 with Mark Haynes top scoring with 16.
Former Guyana Under-19 leg-spinner Troy Gonsalves took 4-9 while left-arm teenage fast bowler Azad Mohamed had 3-17 and Dookie 2-34 to give the Camp Road side their second consecutive win in the competition. They will face Lusignan today at Everest in their next match.
At Bourda, Barrington hit 10 fours and 2 sixes in his 105 after missing his team’s opening game on Friday as MSC reached 225-9 off 40 overs.
Danny Narayan continued his good form with 53 and added 153 runs with Barrington for the 2nd wicket after Skipper Steven Jacobs (8) was removed by pacer Kevin Ogle at 16-1.
Orin Forde (7) and first round centurion Deon Ferrier (3) were removed in quick succession as MSC lost their last 6 wickets for 30 runs as only 3 batsmen got into double figures on the fast outfield.
Former Guyana youth player Ravi Sarwan, the brother of West Indies Test batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan, took 4-36 with his off-spin in his first match since recovering from a shoulder injury. Treon Forde supported with 2-53 in an expensive spell.
GCC, without West Indies players Sarwan and Leon Johnson who participated in private 20/20 matches in Guyana on Friday and again last night, struggled to 183-8 off 40 overs.
Guyana Under-19 player Jeetendra Sookdeo (39) and Elon Fernandes (36) put together 72 for the 2nd wicket after National Under-19 pacer Seon Daniels trapped first round centurion Waslim Haslim leg before for 9 at 29-1.
The left-handed pair struggled to get the ball away before Jacobs had Sookdeo stumped at 103-2 in the 27th over. Yannick Grimes then struck 3 fours and 2 sixes in an undefeated 50 as MSC dropped at least 7 catches in a schoolboy fielding display. Forde took 3-51 and Ferrier 2-37.
At DCC, the host, led by 83 from Chris Barnwell, 50 from the pugnacious Andrew Lyght Junior and 56 from Jamal Hinckson, fell for 278 in 40 overs.
Garfield Morris (3-38), Trevor Benn (3-37), Fitzroy Culley (2-13) and Michael Vyphius (2-40) did the damage for the Cops who reached 160-9 off their allotted 35 overs. Benn top scored with 46 after Regionald Rodrigues (38) and Cecil Adams (21) added 73 for the first wicket.
West Indies Under-19 selectee Trevon Griffith (3-21), his Guyana youth teammate Totaram Bishun (2-19) and ‘old stager’ Gladwin Brandis (2-15) bowled the Queenstown side to victory. The competition continues today.
