Founder of the New Amsterdam United Football Club Mason Phillips (left) presents some of the equipment to U-17 captain Antonio Beckham, while other members look on appreciatively.
Leading Berbice football club, New Amsterdam United, were the recipients of over two hundred thousand dollars worth of football equipment, including boots, uniforms, gloves and balls.
The donation was made by founder of the club overseas based Guyanese Mason Phillips at a simple ceremony which was held recently at the club’s base Esplanade Park, New Amsterdam.
The New Amsterdam United Football Club (NAU) which was formed a few years ago by Phillips as a junior club, known then as New Amsterdam United Juniors, has been blazing the trail since its elevation to the senior league.
Phillips, who was a former Berbice and GDF player was recently back home on holiday. He told the Media that he decided to form the club, after the completion of his playing days, he decided to give back to something that he was involved in and benefited from. Another reason he said, was that none of the clubs in Berbice then, was actually interested in youth football, so he decided to take up the slack and form the club, something which he is very proud of today.
Speaking with some amount of nostalgia, Phillips said that he does not regret spending his time and money back then to plow into the development of the youths. He said that, “The achievement of the club has been commendable and can only get better”. Phillips noted that he is proud of his former charges.
He promised to continue to support his club and will seek to do more in the future. This is the third year that he has been returning with equipment.
New Amsterdam United is the Defending first division champion of Berbice and is currently leading in the points standing for this year, having played unbeaten so far. The club also won the Cheddi Jagan first division competition in Berbice on both occasions, the inaugural competition in 2008 and then successfully defending the title in 2009. It also recently won the inaugural Business School U-17 competition in Berbice and is waiting to play in the finals of the Busta Skills First Division competition which should have been completed since 2008.
Another highpoint of the club was placing second in the International U-15 competition in Georgetown where it lost to the Trinidad and Tobago U-15 champions. The club has over 80 members on roll, with an average age of 17yrs, with an age range of 8-24 yrs.
Phillips expressed displeasure at no member of the club’s U-15 team finding a spot in the national team despite finishing runner-up to T&T in the International club U-15 competition.
