Arrest Army 2-0, Western Tigers spring past GFC 2-1

Defending champions, Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United arrested the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) 2-0 to register their 10th win in 11 matches of the 2009 Cellink Premier League (CPL), increasing their lead at the top of the standings by 6 points from their nearest rival, Camptown.
The other match-up on Friday evening at the Tucville ground saw BK International Western Tigers securing only their 3rd win in 11 appearances when they defeated Georgetown Football Club 2-1. They now move to 11 points, GFC remains on 2 points from a similar amount of matches and it was their 9th defeat.
GDF played well for all of the first 83 minutes of a high octane clash with Alpha, creating many scoring chances but lacked the composure in the final third to bury those chances. Like true champions, Alpha, bided their time and activated the “Hammer” when they knew it would have hurt the most.
Forward Dwight Peters, who tormented the Army’s defence all night long, pounced on a rear mistake by the opponent’s defence in the 83rd minute to opening the scoring for Alpha. Thereafter, it was a different GDF – their body language said it all as the energy and fight that was displayed before evaporated dramatically – allowing the defending champions full control.
That they accepted with glee and put the game beyond the reach of the Army when overlapping defender Anthony Harding sealed the deal in the 2nd minute of added on time to put his team on course of winning the CPL for a third straight year. Alpha is yet to be beaten in the league and have scored a total of 35 goals while only conceeding 4 in 11 matches with 3 more to go.
In the opening game, GFC did well to claw their way back (momentarily) after the Tigers took the lead in the 17th minute with a Nedd Fraser goal. Their leading striker Peter Parks buried a penalty on the second attempt in the 51st minute to even the score but with 5 minutes to game time, they (GFC) conceded a penalty also to the Tigers which was put away clinically by Sherman David.
The Bourda boys were taking the fight to the Tigers and were actually enjoying the better of the exchanges when poor judgement on the part of their left back gave away the penalty which handed Western victory, their 3rd win of the two round league. They now move to 11 points and 5th overall out of 8 teams. GFC remains at the bottom on 2 points following their 9th loss. More play is set for Wednesday at the Tucville ground. Flamingo face GFC in the curtain raiser from 18:00hrs with the main event bringing together Camptown and Fruta Conquerors.
