– father and son held
A row over the alleged theft of cocaine and jewellery is believed to be the motive behind the torching of two small houses in ‘A’ Field, Sophia, at around 04:00 hrs yesterday.
Police have since detained a father and son and are said to be looking for the reputed wife of one of the men, who was allegedly seen in the area when the fire was set.
Both buildings were burnt flat and the occupants were reportedly unable to save anything.
Denise Mollyneaux, who occupied one of the shacks, has alleged that she saw one of the men in custody dousing the building near hers with gasoline before setting it ablaze. The building belonged to Ms. Mollyneaux’s son, Dexter, and her daughter-in-law, Nikita, who traveled overseas with their baby daughter three days ago.
Ms. Mollyneaux said the fire spread to her home, but she and her 14-year-old daughter, Teaiddy, managed to escape unhurt.
The woman said that the incident stemmed from a row between her daughter-in-law and two persons who accused the daughter-in-law of stealing a quantity of jewellery and cocaine.
According to Ms. Mollyneaux, the suspects visited the area last Thursday and warned that they would burn the house down and kill the occupants.
She also alleged that the suspects, a man and his reputed wife, also sent the family several threatening phone calls.
She has since provided the police with the suspects’ phone numbers, which were stored in her mobile phone.
Ms. Mollyneaux recalled that she was up at around 04:00 hrs yesterday when she saw one of the suspects, who was accompanied by his reputed wife, enter the yard.
According to her, the suspect doused her son’s home with gasoline and then set it alight. The woman immediately woke her 14-year-old daughter and they fled to a neighbour’s yard.
The fire service was summoned but by then both flats had been destroyed.
“By the time I come back everything burn,” she said.
Denise Mollyneaux said she lost all her belongings including two beds, a television set, a gas stove and cooking utensils. Ms. Mollyneaux has since given statements to police officials at CID headquarters, Eve Leary.
