Veronica Atherley, the 59-year-old newspaper vendor who was accidentally shot by a businessman last Saturday, died yesterday in the Georgetown Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Atherley’s relatives received the grim news at around 14:50 hrs when they turned up at the hospital to visit her.
The woman’s husband, Martin Atherley, told Kaieteur News that a doctor had informed him on Wednesday that there were “small holes” in his wife’s small intestines.
But at the time, the physician had expressed optimism about his wife’s recovery. “He said that he was working on it and everything would be alright,” Mr. Atherley said.
Mrs. Atherley, who is also survived by six children, was transferred to the ICU and placed on a life support machine on Monday. A son said she was conscious up to yesterday morning when he visited the ward. According to reports, Atherley was sitting at her newspaper stand near the Stabroek Market on Saturday afternoon when she was accidentally shot by a businessman.
At the time, the businessman, a licensed firearm holder, was attempting to shoot at two men who had attempted to rob him.
Atherley was hit below the navel and was rushed to the GPHC. The businessman was subsequently detained.
He is still to be charged and Atherley’s relatives have since sought the services of an attorney.
