Over the past months, there has been a resurged effort by members of the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) to popularize the sport and create a platform for a school tournament.
Now that the inaugural interaction sessions are over, the regular members are preparing to resume their itinerary with the GASP Open championships scheduled for this Sunday at the famous Georgetown Cricket Club Ground.
There was a time when one could have predicted the outcome of these tournaments with relative ease. Such is no longer the case as the rookies have now qualified into the senior ranks by dint of their consistent victories.
The situation is no longer cut and dried and it is with this in mind that players, the likes of Paul Adams and Curtis Liverpool will enter this tournament feeling that they have a realistic chance of eclipsing the performance of players like Moen Gafoor, Fred Collins, Ulric Harris and James Krakowsky among others. A keen tournament is envisaged and the player that has practiced diligently along with those that can learn and retain their vocabulary, most likely will come out at the top of the heap. With this in mind, the senior players may do well to come prepared.
Meanwhile the players convened for practice sessions at the Malteenoes Cricket Club last evening. Members are urged to attend these sessions since constant practice has proven to be beneficial in the long run. Word formation time for Sunday’s tournament is 10:00hrs.
