Opener Waslim Haslim’s 106 led GCC to victory against University of Guyana (UG) while a useful all-round performance from Troy Gonsalves helped Everest beat Transport Sports Club (TSC) as action in the Demerara zone of the National Neal & Massy 40-overs first division cricket competition continued.
In the other scheduled game, hosts DCC got a walk over from East Bank Side Nandy Park.
At Bourda, Haslim dominated a 143-run 2nd wicket partnership in 18 overs with West Indies player Leon Johnson as GCC reached 273-7 off their allotted 40 overs.
UG were bowled out for 147 in 36 overs with Ronald McDonald top scoring with an unbeaten 34 as National Under-17 player Delon Fernandes took 3-7 and leg-spinner Johnson 2-22.
Haslim and Johnson (both dropped early in their innings) joined forces after Elon Fernandes (1) was caught behind off Steve Rekheram at 13-1 in the 2nd over and aided by some loose work in the field by the University students, Haslim, who scored 94 of the runs in the partnership, took the attack to the bowlers on the fast outfield while Johnson played the supporting role.
Skipper and off-spinner Dhaniram Seepersaud bowled 31 dot balls in an impressive 8-over spell to finish with 1-31. He broke the 2nd wicket stand in the 20th over when Haslim, who was dropped in the same over, lofted a catch to deep mid-wicket to leave the score on 156-2.
Haslim’s 106 lasted 68 balls and included 15 fours and a six while Johnson, who took 78 balls for his even fifty with 2 fours, was taken at short mid-wicket off Dwayne Dodson (2-53) at 186-4. This was after Yannick Grimes (1) was bowled by Rovin Crawford at 160-3. Treon Forde (26) and Delon Fernandes (32) ensured GCC passed the 250 mark.
When UG began their reply, the towering Tyrone English (22) was run out at 37-1 after he had hit Kevin Ogle for a massive straight six.
Dodson (30) and McDonald showed some fight but nobody else offered prolonged resistance on a flat track as GCC, who opened the bowling with left-arm spinner Raj Nanan, romped to an easy victory against talented but vastly inexperienced opponents in their debut first division season.
At Everest Abilash Dookie hit 55 and got support from Gonsalves (50) and Ryan Rajmangal (34) as Marcus Watkins took 2-46 for Transport Sports Club (TSC) who were bowled out for 173 all out in 28.4 overs.
Shane Cummings made 58 and Shawn Massiah 18 as Christopher Surat (2-11), Gonsalves (2-35) and Chanderpaul Hemraj (2-40) bowled well for the Camp Road team.
