Energized after attaining his hundredth victory on the trot, national race walk champion, Rudolph Mitchell, instead of cooling his heels, has decided to ‘bat on’ when he engages his adversaries in a 10K race organised by the Cavalier’s Sports and Tour Club (CSTC), around the inner circuit of the National Park this Sunday.
The event will bring the curtains down on the CSTC 5th Race Walk Month of Activities which got underway at the beginning of August. The cream of the country’s race walkers is expected to compete and even though Mitchell has recently attained the coveted milestone, he is still hungry and refuses to relinquish his indomitable position.
Once again, the old veteran will have to stave off the challenges of old foes, Jonathon Fagundes and Oneil Durant, yet he is undaunted.
Minister of Amerindian Affairs Pauline Sukhai, will send the walkers on their way at 06:30hrs sharp. She will return to present the prizes to the respective winners at the end of the event. The walkers will compete for lucrative prizes and once again, the corporate community has responded to the call for support.
Meanwhile, Mitchell completed the coveted milestone in a 10k race around Soesdyke August 29 last. Reflecting on his achievement, the veteran race walker pointed out that he had enjoyed every minute of the journey. He recalled that his most memorable race occurred in the late 90s, over 40 miles traversing hilly terrain, from the Soesdyke junction to Wismar Housing Scheme.
That was a defining event and paved the way for his other successes. “I will never forget the torture that I experienced in that race,” he wryly proclaimed. “Nevertheless, I enjoyed it and afterwards vowed to keep on walking since I really love the sport,” he concluded.
After crossing the finishing line, Mitchell’s colleagues gathered around him to offer congratulations. Female race walk queen, Donna Ramkissoon was full of praise for her colleague. “It was only through dedication and staunch commitment that Rudy has achieved this feat,” she said. The top female race walker further described Mitchell as her mentor and teacher. “I wish to urge him to continue in this vein and chalk up some more successes,” she concluded.
Jonathon Fagundes also praised Mitchell even as he (Fagundes) committed to intensify efforts to dethrone the champ. His praises were echoed by Jeremy Cornelius, Olga Harry, Debydial Harold and Brian Roberts, among others.
Director of Youth and Sports, Neil Kumar, who had participated in Mitchell’s 99th race from the Two Brothers Gas Station to the Mocha/East Bank junction, at the recently staged William France walk, also congratulated Mitchell on his sterling achievement and pledged support for the race walk champ in his future endeavors.
