The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) has condemned the detention and expulsion of all the foreign members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
At the party’s weekly press briefing yesterday at Congress Place, Leader of the party, Robert Corbin, urged all Guyanese to take careful note of how the government is treating its foreigners.
“We consider it an affront to the religious community for the Jagdeo administration to behave in such an arbitrary and high-handed manner…smacking quiet clearly as an assault on the religious community, and one must wonder what they have done to reap such unjust rewards from a criminal administration…when they should in fact be seeking to get prayers and blessings from any religious sect at this time for their misdeeds over the last few months as have been revealed in the US courts,” Corbin said.
According to the PNCR Leader, the people of Guyana need to ensure that they hold the government accountable for the way it treats foreigners, “So we could hold our heads high when we travel abroad and ask for equitable treatment in those other countries and not have it thrown in our faces that our own government is in breach of some of those rules of natural justice.”
He explained that when diplomatic issues of these kinds are being experienced, governments respond by reciprocal treatment.
The PNCR also noted that contrary to the utterances from the Ministry of Home Affairs, the party has been reliably informed that members of the Church have been complying with the law and have used the relevant procedures to represent their interests.
“What is evident, however, is an apparent vendetta by the PPP/C Administration towards this religious body, which has been carrying out religious and social development activities in Guyana for more than two decades.”
However, according to the PNCR, the official report of the Government also deliberately misinforms Guyanese of what transpired, thus questioning the motivations of the PPP/C Administration.
“Why would a senior Police Officer when presented with a Court Order from the High Court indicate that the Government did not intend to honour that Order? The continuous disregard for the law, the Constitution and the Judiciary by President Jagdeo was again evident. After refusing to accept the Court Order, the President then invites two of these religious representatives to his Office and proceeds to deliver his personal 30-day clemency period for their departure, demonstrating that he is above the law.”
