Home team Fruta Conquerors handed Pele their seventh loss in 10 outings when the 2009 Cellink Premier League continued on Wednesday evening, at the Tucville Community ground.
In what turned out to be an intense battle, Conquerors, fielding a number of young players mixed with a few older heads, managed to hold their nerves at the death and it was a junior national striker Manessah Primo who separated the two sides with the winning goal a mere 3 minutes to full time.
Both sides played well, but the home team rallied in the end to take full points, taking their tally to 16 points with their fifth win from 10 games, drawing one and losing four. Pele suffered their seventh defeat, having won two and drawing one to remain on a miserly 7 points and sixth overall in the eight-team tournament.
The opening game proved to be almost disaster for Camptown who managed to scrape a draw against the ever improving Flamingo. Again, it was Flamingo’s most experienced and influential player, Leon ‘Zambuly’ Yaw, who was the thorn in Camptown’s flesh all evening.
Yaw, who has also proven his worth in the Futsal (indoor) version of the game sent Flamingo ahead after 19 minutes of exchanges. Like their other games in this the second and final round, Flamingo nosed ahead early and were able to maintain that advantage for quite some time.
Their ability to focus in the latter stages of games was again brought into question, but at least this time around, they held on for an equal share of the spoils.
Camptown, who set up camp in the Flamingo half for most of the final period just could not find the back of the nets owing to some stiff defending by their opponents.
They nudged in the equaliser in the 70th minute through Rishawn Sandiford whose well placed free kick had goal written all over it from the time the ball left his feet.
The Campbellville boys turned up the heat in the closing minutes as they went in search of the go ahead goal, but it eluded them.
They now move to 25 points and second overall, three less than defending champions and leaders Alpha United and one more than the Guyana Defence Force in third.
Flamingo moves to 3 points and the penultimate position in the standings, a single point ahead of Georgetown Football Club.
Another double header will be played this evening. GDF and Alpha United go head to head in what is expected to be a scorching dual. The opening game at 18:00 pits GFC against BK International Western Tigers.
