Playing his final Under-19 game, Berbice all rounder Terrence Madramootoo produced an outstanding batting performance to lead his team, Rose Hall Town Pepsi to a nail biting two wicket win over Scottsburg United to successfully retain the Spready’s Bakery Under-19 championship trophy.
Madramootoo slammed an unbeaten 61 (4 sixes 7 fours) and joined forces with Berbice Under-15 leg spinner Shawn Perreira with their team in tatters at 100-8 in the 28 over chasing 161 for victory off 47 overs. The two added 66 vital runs to guide their team to an exciting and memorable 2-wicket win.
Earlier in the day in a match reduced to 47 overs due to early morning rain, Scottsburg elected to bat first after winning the toss and soon found themselves in trouble at 12-3 in the 5th over.
Offspinner Mark Fernandes opening the bowling had opener Mark Lionel lbw for 3 in the 2nd over before medium pacer Madramootoo bowled Ryan Ramdass for 3 and then had national Under-19 batsman Alex Amsterdam caught behind driving for 2.
Trevor Thomas and national Under-19 captain Anthony Bramble survived some testing bowling to lead a recovery, adding 92 for the 4th wicket before Bramble departed caught off national Under-15 player Dominic Rickey for a well played 61 (6 fours 1 six) at 104-4 in the 32nd over.
Tony Ramsarran was then bowled by Rickey for 4 at 118-5. The remaining batsmen apart from Thomas struggled against the spin based attack as Scottsburg were dismissed for 160 in the 46th, Thomas being last out for a patient 44 (2 fours).
Bowling for Rose Hall Town Pepsi, Madramootoo took 2-26, Rickey 2-25, Shawn Perreira 2-29 and Lloydel Lewis 2-38.
Chasing 161 to win, Rose Hall were rocked early on by medium pacer Marvin Harvey.
Rickey was caught behind for 1 at 6-1 in the 3rd over while his opening partner was trapped lbw for 7 at 14-2 in the 5th over.
Skipper Eon Hooper and No. 3 batsman Leon Crawford staged a mini recovery by adding 31 in 6 overs before Harvey struck again by bowling Crawford for 6. Hooper was then caught brilliantly at cover by Harvey off offspinner Alex Amsterdam for an aggressive 33 (2 sixes 3 fours) to leave Rose Hall dangerously placed at 58-4 in the 16th over.
Scottsburg sensing victory kept the pressure up as Lloydel Lewis 12, Nelroy Hicks 7, Lionel Lewis 2 and Simon Lawson 8 were sent back cheaply to leave the home team at 100-8.
The experienced Madramootoo who has represented Berbice at the Under-15, 17 and 19 levels attacked the bowling with success and in partnership with the level headed thirteen year old Perreira took the fight to the visitors.
