A brilliant all round performance by Leon Andrews led New Amsterdam/Canje to first innings points and victory over Upper Corentyne and with it, the first ever Poonai’s Pharmacy sponsored Under-13 inter zone cricket tournament in the Ancient County.
Andrews took 4-13 runs and returned with the bat to strike 35 in a performance that places him as one for the future in the County and Guyana.
Batting first after winning the toss, Upper Corentyne were sent packing for a paltry 52 off just 27.1 overs. Only Anthony Hoomraj reached double figures with 15 as off spinners Andrews with 4-13 and Kierre Henry 3-12 were too hot for the Upper Corentyne batsmen to handle.
In response, New Amsterdam/Canje reached 172 all out in the last of their allotted 60 overs. Openers Leon Andrews (35) and Gary Millington (30) added 72 for the first wicket before Millington was run out in the 21st over.
Other useful contributions came from Hakeem Hinds 38 (3 fours) and Mark Shepherd 20. Bowling for Upper Corentyne Videsh Goonai took 5-55 from 19.5 overs.
Batting a second time, Upper Corentyne with a deficit of 120 runs were 48-1 off 10 overs when the game ended. Opener Ryan Persaud was unbeaten on 23 (4 fours) and Goonia on 21 (3 fours).
Leon Andrews copped the Man-of-the-Finals award, Goonia the best bowler prize while Hakeem Hinds was named the best batsman.
Secretary of the Berbice Cricket Board Angela Haniff at the presentation ceremony complimented all for bringing off an historic tournament which unearthed several new and talented players.
Haniff conveyed the Board’s profound gratitude to sponsor Poonai Bhirooj for his support of Berbice cricket and noted that game in the jurisdiction which is being played at all levels is at an all time high.
Sponsor Poonai Bhirooj responding noted his delight at being associated with the game in Berbice. He expressed satisfaction on the way the tournament was organised and run while noting that next year’s edition would be bigger and better.
