Lower Corentyne stormed into the finals of the Republic Bank sponsored Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) inter-zone Under-17 tournament after defeating Central/Upper Corentyne on first innings at the Albion Community Centre.
Guiding Lower Corentyne to victory were former national Under-15 player Dominic Rickey who scored a brilliant 91 spiced up with 8 fours and national Under-15 left arm spinner Gudakesh Motie Kanhai who snared 7-25. Batting first after winning the toss, Lower Corentyne posted 228-8 off their allotted first innings quota of 60 overs.
Rickey received support from Sharmendra Hardial who hit 38 (6 fours), Rajendra Dasrat 21 and Shawn Perreira 20*. Off spinner Chaitram Naurang had figures of 4-72 and Tyrone Edwards 2-31 bowling for Central/Upper Corentyne who in response were dismissed for 143 in the 49th over.
Opener Trevor Thomas was the top run getter with a disciplined 51 (5 fours) while skipper Clinton Pestano chipped in with 23 (3 fours) and Rajin Narine 14*.
Earlier in the day, the tournament was officially launched with BCB Public Relations Officer Hilbert Foster hailing it as an investment by the Board in the county’s future since it was bridging the gap between the Under-15 and 19 levels.
Foster told the cricketers to be dedicated to the game as cricket is now being played at all levels in Berbice from the Under-13 to the senior levels.
Third Vice President of the Board Pastor Mark Lyte expressed gratitude to Republic Bank for their support of the game in Berbice, noting that they are determined to return the game to its former glory.
Rose Hall Town Republic Bank Branch Manager, Leon Mc Donald, in declaring the tournament open, stated that Republic Bank was delighted to once again be associated with cricket in the Ancient County and urged the young players to give of their best and to always aim for the highest standards.
Mc Donald was emphatic in stating that Republic Bank would continue to invest in youth developmental projects as they see it as an investment into Guyana’s future.
The Tournament will continue tomorrow with New Amsterdam/Canje clashing with West Berbice at the Rose Hall Canje ground.
