Ranks of a police mobile patrol discharged several rounds in vain at a gunman who eluded them, leaving his weapon behind, in a mid-morning raid in North Ruimveldt yesterday.
The man made good his escape by fleeing through a clump of bushes before clearing a canal that separates North Ruimveldt from the Lamaha Springs area.
Several residents were forced to cower in their homes as the gunshots rang out.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that the police ranks received information that the man was wanted for a robbery under arms and confronted him on Cul de Sac Street. North Ruimveldt.
There are reports that the man was apprehended by the ranks in a yard and was being taken to the police vehicle when it was observed that he had a gun in his waist.
As the police attempted to take possession of the weapon, a .45 with six live rounds, the suspect made a dash for it, taking the ranks by surprise.
They gave chase but not being too familiar with the area, the ranks had to eventually give up.
Police subsequently detained four persons who occupied the bottom flat of the house in the yard where the man was apprehended, although several neighbours said that they were not connected to him.
