An autopsy conducted yesterday on 80-year-old, Kharpattie Shivnauth, called ‘Ma’, revealed that she died from suffocation.
Investigators told Kaieteur News that the pathologist found bruises on the elderly victim’s face and inside her mouth. Relatives who found Shivnauth’s body said that the killers had stuffed a large piece of cloth in her mouth.
Kaieteur News was told that the pathologist was unable to ascertain whether Shivnauth was sexually assaulted.
However, samples taken from the victim’s body are to be tested for evidence of rape. Meanwhile, police were still questioning five people in connection with the elderly woman’s murder. A woman who police had detained has since been released.
The prime suspect, known as ‘Po Po’, remains in custody.
Gopaul Nauth, one of the Shivnauth’s sons, told Kaieteur News that he found a cutlass which persons said belongs to the suspect, in his mother’s house yesterday. He said he handed the cutlass over to the police.
The sixth man is a neighbour who was allegedly seen acting suspiciously near Shivnauth’s home on the night she is believed to have been slain.
Shivnauth had reportedly chased him from her yard about a week ago when he had tried to sell her a gold chain.
A source told Kaieteur News that the man was deported from the United States and Trinidad.
Shivnauth, who lived alone at Lot 66 Independence Road, La Grange, was found at around 19:00 hrs on Friday by her son and other relatives.
She was naked and bound to her bed with strips of cloth. A granddaughter also said that a dress was stuffed into her mouth.
The primary motive appeared to be robbery, since the killer(s) had stripped their victim of a pair of gold earrings, gold bangles and a ring that she always wore.
