The three officers allegedly involved in the disappearance of a large quantity of money which they reportedly relieved two persons of at a roadblock, yesterday appeared before Magistrate Fazil Azeez at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court.
The trio had appeared in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday, and were charged with simple larceny. At yesterday’s session in a Vreed-en-Hoop courtroom, the simple larceny charges were discontinued at the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Cadet Officer Kevon Denny and Police Constables Gordon James and Leyland Fraser are now jointly charged with larceny by a public officer.
Attorneys-at-Law Nigel Hughes and James Bond, representing the defendants, made applications for bail, claiming their clients are not a flight risk. Bail was refused on the grounds of the seriousness of the offence. They are to return to the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court on September 7.
It is alleged that on August 20, last, the three officers while on duty stole $4.8M from Shawn Ajeda, which was the property of Azeem Baksh.
The missing money represents a part of the total cash recovered following the August 20 $17M river heist, involving three ranks from the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard, which led to the death of 23-year old Bartica resident, Dweive Kant Ramdass.
The money was allegedly stolen at a roadblock near the Demerara Harbour Bridge where the policemen had intercepted a car traveling from Parika to the city.
