GNIC, Everest to link up in final after MSC, DCC go down in semis

Everest and the Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) will link up this weekend in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Cellink first-division 2-day cricket final after emerging on top in their semi-final battles on Sunday.
GNIC whipped host Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) by 42 runs and home team Everest took first innings points from the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) in their drawn encounter to set up what should be a keenly contested final.
At MSC, 20-year-old Steven Jacobs led a futile effort to give his team a come-from-behind win with a scintillating 81, decorated with 9 fours and 5 sixes and although ex-National Under-19 leg-spinner Danny Narayan supported with a solid 53, MSC, chasing 282 to win on the final day, fell for 240.
Former West Indies Under-19 Captain Jacobs, who played 8 First-Class matches, played an array of stunning shots but fell when 20 short of his 3rd century in the competition as the Butts clan combined to push their team into the final.
Off-spinner Clyde Butts, who took 10 wickets from 7 Tests in the 1980s and 348 first-class wickets, followed up his 4-74 in the first innings with 2-33.
His son Collis Butts grabbed 3-44 even as pacer Jeremiah Harris (26) tried to keep the hectic run chase alive.
MSC began the final day on 155-7 replying to GNIC’s 277 and Berbician left-arm spinner Damien Vantull, who was overnight on 33, counter-attacked the bowling to further enhance his chances of Demerara selection with a robust 75 as MSC fell for 210.
Vantull, the competition’s leading wicket-taker, got little support as GNIC took a 67-run first innings lead.
GNIC then made 214 in their second innings to set MSC the formidable victory target in hot conditions.
Butts, a West Indies selector, continued to undermine the progress of his much younger opposition with his crafty off-spin as the much vaunted MSC top order again failed to fire.
The talented Jacobs, maturing into a very responsible cricketer, tried his best to lead from the front but apart from Narayan nobody else offered sustained support.
At Camp Road, DCC resumed on 105-3 replying to Everest’s 246 and were bowled out for 199. Christopher Barnwell took his overnight 47 to 68 before he lost his wicket as Christopher Surat (4-44) and Amir Khan (3-51) did the damage for Everest.
Everest made156 runs in their second innings as ‘Keeper Joseph Perry (31) and Khan (29) helped them to a lead of 47.
National pacer Trevon Garraway grabbed four wickets while Barnwell chipped in with three.
Everest were bowled out in the final hour of play for an overall lead of 203 runs but DCC was only able to face one over in their second innings before the scheduled close of play.
