National Basketball Coach Robert ‘Bobby’ Cadogan has made his intentions clear to start work at the grassroots level after returning from an Olympic Solidarity and Pan American Sports Organisation (PASO) Course in Mexico.
Cadogan successfully completed the five-day Basketball Continental Course and was one of the recipients of a Diploma in High Performance training. He returned to Guyana early Sunday morning after leaving the previous Sunday.
“Basically in a nut shell, the course was focusing on High Performance athletes – the entire preparation process and the scientific issues related,” Cadogan told Kaieteur Sport at one of the Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) training sessions.
The former national basketball player and Head Coach of Courts Pacesetters Club stated that he was brought up to date with the latest forms of High Performance preparation for both national and international players and teams.
The International Basketball Federation’s (FIBA) Professor Nelson Isley was the primary instructor on the course. “His (Isley) focus was more on the court. He took us through the whole range of drills to better prepare players,” he said.
“Everything in the game is related to fundamentals. There are players who are already too spoilt to train now. My intention is to start at the grassroots level with the young players, who are now coming through,” Cadogan continued.
One of his most memorable moments on the course was being able to rub shoulders with Trinidad and Tobago’s former national coach, Joseph Lenny-Guy, who led the Island to five Caribbean Basketball Championship titles.
“It was a truly rewarding and good experience for me as a coach because it expanded my knowledge base,” he believed. Cadogan is one of three Guyanese coaches who are FIBA accredited and is currently preparing the IGG team.
Cadogan also has a Diploma in coaching from the Senwell Neis Institute of Coaching and Sport Education in Hungary. He is Head Coach of the Courts Pacesetters Basketball Club and Technical Director of the national federation.
