Fifty-one year-old Eglon Mc Lennon, a route 45 bus driver, yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Mc Lennon, of Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara, was charged with dangerous driving, causing death. The matter is indictable and as such, the defendant was not required to plea.
It is alleged that on August 27, the defendant, at Lamaha Street and Camp Road, drove in a manner dangerous to the public, thus, causing the death of 40-year-old, Steve Abel, of 85 Melanie Damishana, East Coast Demerara.
The defendant told the court that he was travelling along Lamaha Street in an easterly direction, when he noticed three motorcycles speeding along the road towards him from the north. He then explained that one of the motorcyclists overtook a car and then swerved. He went on further to say that after the rider swerved he rode headlong into the side of the minibus.
Mc Lennon recalled that the impact was so great that the cyclist was catapulted through the minibus window, hit a passenger, and ended up out of the other side of the bus on the road.
Upon looking out of the bus, Mc Lennon saw the victim lying facedown. He told the court that he had made efforts to call the police and the ambulance, adding that he did not get through to either.
He subsequently took Abel to the hospital in another vehicle, where he later died. Mc Lennon was later arrested and taken into custody.
The Police Prosecutor told the court that the defendant was speeding along the road, when he hit Steve Abel who was travelling on his motorcycle, resulting in his death.
Mc Lennon was remanded, and is to return to court on September 7.
